The Hero's Journey
Guide to Literature and Life

Used by schools in 30states

The Hero's Journey: A Guide to Literature and Life has became a part of the English programs in schools in more than 30 states and a dozen foreign countries. Why are teachers finding this curriculum so valuable? The answer is simple. The heroic journey is the pattern of human experience. As such it underlies virtually all literature and film. This universality makes the heroic pattern an ideal vehicle for comprehension, analysis and comparison. More importantly, it helps students apply the lessons of literature and film to their own lives.

What is the Hero's Journey curriculum?

The Hero's Journey is a 10 chapter, 12-unit curriculum which uses the pattern of the heroic journey as a foundation for studying and understanding literature, film, and experience. Developed over years of classroom use, the curriculum emphasizes writing and collaborative learning through character analysis, short story writing, group presentations and a reflective essay. It is both powerful and flexible:
  • It can be adapted for students at any level, from grades 8 to 12, from transition to graduate, from at-risk to honors.
  • It incorporates literature, film, art and speech under a unified theme with a logical, progressive structure.
  • It will merge easily with your existing curriculum.

What's in The Hero's Journey package

The Hero's Journey Curriculum contains lesson plans, background notes, handouts, transparancies and supplementary materials--everything you need for up to a year's worth of teaching, including,
  • Units on the Rite of Passage and the Hero's Journey.
  • Four myths/legends and two film projects.
  • Three major writing projects: a character analysis, a hero's journey short story and a reflective essay.
  • A group research project and oral presentation.
