The Lesson Plan includes a brief introduction to the unit, key concepts, objectives, a suggested approach, possible enrichment activities and key points for assessment.

The “Legend of the Buddha” is more than just an example of the heroic journey pattern. Buddhist philosophy offers us some valuable insights into the journey process itself. One of those insights comes from the teachings of impermanence and non-attachment.

This section provides extensive background notes that you can use for enrichment or discussion. There are many versions of the Buddha legend, most of the long and involved. Our version is greatly simplified to focus primarily on the events in the legend that will help students understand the hero’s journey pattern and to give teachers a story they can read and discuss in one class period. The story is accompanied by relevant quotes that you can use for discussion or writing topics.

6. Review Questions for Discussion or Writing
These six questions (with sample responses) focus on helping students explore and develop their understanding of the Hero’s Journey. Questions can be done in class or as homework, or they can be used as topics for essays.

7. Appendix: Charts and Graphic Activities
The Appendix offers a number of Hero’s Journey charts, including Joseph Campbell’s 17-stage model, which you might find useful in your study of Buddha’s journey. It also includes “Logging the Journey” and “Charting Change,” two activities that will help students explore and understand not just the journey, but the process of transformation that underlies the journey.
