Welcome to the Hero’s Journey

My “new” 15-year-old site

Welcome to this newly reformatted version of my Hero’s Journey website. I’ve maintained my site since 1997, and during those 15 years, it has undergone a number of changes. Now, I am moving it to this WordPress format, which gives me more flexibility and allows better communication with teachers, counselors and other readers.

Our teacher’s guide, The Hero’s Journey: A Guide to Literature and Life, is still in print after 17 years and a couple of revisions and is now being used by schools in 47 states and 17 countries. While it is primarily a teacher’s manual, it has also been used in counselling and therapy.

While this site is fully functional, it does not yet contain all of the articles from the old site. I will be moving those articles to the Hero’s Journey Library over the next several weeks, so check back often. Even if you’ve read the old articles, you might want to read them again because I will be expanding and editing many of them to incorporate my MA (psychology) research and my current study in neurobiology and trauma.

Follow the Fallow Deer

I’ve chosen an image of the “fallow deer” for this first blog post. In mythology, the fallow deer often led would-be heroes into a dark forest, where they would become lost in the adventure and discover their personal quests. I’m hoping that this site and blog will become sort of a “digital fallow deer,” leading you into your adventure and helping you discover and embrace your quests.

Toward that goal, this blog will present what used to be my “monthly” thoughts and comments. This new format makes adding and updating material much easier. More importantly, it allows us to engage in a real dialogue on the Hero’s Journey and related subjects and to share ideas on the journey, on teaching the journey, and on using the journey pattern to enrich, heal and expand our lives.

Join the Journey

I’m retired now, with 37 years experience studying and teaching the Hero’s Journey, so the Journey has been the focus of my life for neary four decades. Exploring its power to guide, heal and enlighten is my passion. However, all of my work and experience is meaningless if what I’ve learned on my journey can’t help you with yours. So, please, join the conversation.
